How did we decide this list as Top 8?

To keep a product in Top 8 Furnace Humidifiers list there are many factors to consider. We took more than 40 models and examined all the important factors. Furthermore, we analyzed 170+ reviews and prepared this list of Furnace Humidifiers after 64 hours of our research.

How do furnace Humidifiers Work?

A furnace humidifier works by taking moisture from water and evaporating it into a warm air- stream that comes from the furnace of the machine.

There are different types of furnace humidifiers but all have the following essential components in them:

  • Water (to create vapors from)
  • Water collection medium (like evaporator pad)
  • Water control valve
  • Humidistat (to control humidity)

What basically happens is, a cold- water supply is given to the humidifier by the use of a saddle valve. Now, the amount of water to be supplied needs to be controlled which is done by an inlet valve that is connected and controlled by a solenoid that is further controlled by a humidistat (that control the humidity setting).

When the humidity is increased through the humidistat, the solenoid turns on and water is fed into the humidifier. When humidistat is set on low, the solenoid turns off and water flow is stopped.

The water inlet feed tube that runs to the top of the humidifier, delivers water to a water distribution trough that allows the water flow equally to all portions of the evaporator panel or evaporator pad. The evaporator pad distributes water equally after which the water evaporates and the mineral get deposited in the pad itself. This collection of mineral lead to a white powder coating over the evaporator pad after a season of usage which needs to be cleaned but preferably changed.

Unevaporated water, in flow- through type humidifiers, is run out of the evaporator pad into a drain pan from where it runs out of the household through a drain.

Flow- through type humidifiers are different from reservoir types as they do not collect water and hence there is no build- up of bacteria.

How to Install a Furnace Humidifier?

To install a Whole House Furnace Humidifier you would require certain materials and tools. You will require Cordless drill and bit, aviation snips, screwdrivers, wire strippers, adjustable wrench, felt- tip marker, humidifier unit, vent pipe, sheet metal screws and wire nuts, essentially.

Now, onto the steps on how to actually get the installation done-

  • READ THE MANUAL AND INTRUCTION THOROUGHY!
  • Constructing the hole for the humidifier: Firstly, turn off the furnace and mark out the area to be drilled using a felt- tip and template. Drill the outline with starter holes and then cut the area with an aviation snips. Keep the mounting plate at correct position before drilling the holes and then attach the mounting plate using with sheet metal screws.
  • Constructing the hole for the humidistat: From the instruction manual, know the position of the humidistat, it is usually placed on the cold air plenum above the humidifier. Mark the holes to be drilled and then cut it. After the hole is cut out, secure the humidistat on the mounting plate with tin screws supplied in the installation kit.
  • Installation of the electrical: From the manufacturer’s instruction manual, learn about connecting the humidistat to the electrical or furnace control. Make sure the power is shut down. Complete the wiring of the humidistat and install the transformer. Seek professional assistance, if required.
  • Connecting the Furnace Mounted Humidifier: Start from the humidistat point and connect humidistat to the solenoid valve with the correct size of the nut, attach the nuts and wire ends securely and carefully turn the nuts completely tight. Be careful not to twist the wire.
  • Installation of the water line to the Humidifier For Furnace: This is essentially the last step and constitutes installing a saddle valve on the water line if direct tapping of water line is allowed by the local codes, then run this line to the humidifier and speed it up using a compression fitting. In case, the saddle valve is not allowed at the water line and install at- fitting, then use a Bypass- line.

When and if you reach an issue or step that feels difficult to address by self, do seek the help of a professional before you or someone else who isn’t a pro ends up hampering the system. The Furnace Humidifier Installation should take approximately two hours of time.

Furnace Humidifier Maintenance Tips

While furnace humidifiers are need lower maintenance than portable ones, maintenance is a major part of buying and keeping a Furnace Mounted Humidifier. The evaporator panel or pad in which the water gets collected while evaporating gets accumulated with the residual minerals from the water and the residue is like a white powder. This white powder gets a lot in amount after a season or 1-2 months or more and it is an essential part of maintenance of Whole House Furnace Humidifier to clean the mineral build- up. It is although preferred that the evaporator panel is changed altogether.

TURN OFF the humidifier before attempting any maintenance or cleaning.

Some of the maintenance tips for Furnace Mounted Humidifier are:

  • Keep the filter/ evaporator pad clean– due to mineral build- up from the residual water, there is accumulation of white powder on the evaporator panel. This reduces the efficiency of the system to work properly as a humidifier. That is why becomes very important for you to clean the pad and change it at apt times. To clean it, you can use cold water and a wash cloth and scrub along the surface to get rid of the build- up.
  • Deep clean annually- with time and usage, rust and hard water deposits accumulate inside of the humidifier and this ultimately reduces the amount of moisture that the humidifier disperses in the air. Thus, it is necessary to deep clean the humidifier thoroughly by following the user manual’s instructions.
  • Periodic leak checks- the humidifier may start leaking sometime due to a fault or breakage. If this happens then turn off the water supply till the issue is found and rectified.
  • Anti- bacterial treatments- after a heating season, the water panel and water wheels get accumulated with bacteria. It is important to treat the evaporator pad and wheels with an anti- bacterial treatment to curb the bacterial growth.

How to Choose A Furnace Humidifier- Things to consider

There aren’t many things complex about a Whole House Furnace Humidifier. While choosing the ideal Furnace Mounted Humidifier for your house, you need to keep in mind mostly three things- your need, your ability to afford it and how willing you are to do regular maintenance. To make the purchasing process easier, you first need to know about the existing types of Whole House Furnace Humidifier. There are three types, namely- Bypass, Fan- powered and steam.

Bypass- these draw warm air from your home’s furnace and run it through the evaporator pad where the water lies and evaporation starts. The moisturized air is dispersed throughout the house. These usually require a floor drain but drainless variants are also available. Amongst all the types, these are the cheapest and most affordable.

Fan- powered- these work the same way as bypass just that here the fan speeds up the evaporation process and due to this speeding up, it produces way more moisture than a bypass variant.

Steam- these work by creating steam electrically by heating the water without the use of a furnace. A system blower then disperses this steam throughout the house. These are the fastest, most efficient and costliest in all types of humidifiers.

A few aspects that YOUR ideal Whole House Furnace Modifier should possess are-

Efficient water consumption

Efficient water consumption- ask for variants with mechanisms that allows minimal water consumption which also lead to lower cooling and heating charges.

More maintenance interval

Pocket

Pocket- friendly- lack of knowledge about the kind of humidifier you want to buy can easily burn a hole through your pocket. There are various kinds of humidifiers ranging from $100 something to over $700. BROSWE.

Coverage

The humidifiers in the market, all come with a different coverage area. Choose a humidifier that can cover your whole house easily. Also, if your house is small, choose one that has apt coverage so that you don’t end up paying for more coverage that you are not even going to use.

Other

Other important features to check should be the sensitivity of the humidistat and the energy it takes by the humidifier to convert its certain Gallons of water into humidity.

FAQ's

Not all water or evaporator panels need to be changed. Some can be washed and cleaned with water and a cloth. When it comes to changing, most panels are changed yearly. The manufacturer may direct in case of other replacement interval.
