At least 11 Chinese migrants were found hiding inside a washing machine and various furniture pieces inside a truck that was traveling from Mexico to California. The truck was stopped by border agents at the Mexico-US border. On searching the truck, officials were shocked to discover a few individuals inside a washing machine while a few others were crammed up inside a wooden chest and drawer.
The photos were taken by the US Customs and Border officials, and these are quite disturbing. These pictures show a migrant hidden within a washing machine and another one inside a wooden chest.
The person driving the truck was a 42-year old US citizen whose identity is yet to be established. He was arrested on suspected charges of human smuggling. Officials of the US Customs and Border Protection had waylaid the truck at around 5.25 pm on Saturday, December 7th around the border area of Tijuana, Mexico, and San Francisco. Charges of human smuggling were imposed on the truck driver and accordingly, he was handed over to the Metropolitan Correctional Center. The concerned officials at the center would be handling the criminal proceedings of the case.
All the eleven migrants have been held so as to investigate this matter further. The plan is to carry out criminal and immigration proceedings against them. However, all of them seem to be in good health.
Pete Flores, who is in charge of the field operations of Customs and Border Protection in San Diego, California, stated that “CBP cannot stress enough the dangers of smuggling people. These are human beings that smugglers subject to inhumane conditions that could have deadly consequences.” He also stated that it was really good that none of these migrants was seriously injured.
This is not the first such incident to occur. It was just last month on November 7th when six Chinese nationals were discovered by federal agencies at the same border post between Tijuana and San Diego. Apparently, these people were found hiding inside a false wall of a truck. The officer who stopped these people from entering became suspicious when he discovered the rear door of the truck to be open.
Apparently, these types of bizarre incidents are not the ones to occur in the US alone. In the United Kingdom, sometime towards the end of October, at least 39 Vietnamese migrants were discovered dead inside a truck that was completely refrigerated. The truck had come to England from Belgium.
This kind of incident has come to light at a time when the relations between the two countries are not so friendly, to say the least. Very recently, the American government had banned the usage of devices belonging to Huawei, which is a Chinese-based firm, on all its communication networks across the country. Huawei, on the other hand, had resorted to manufacturing its devices without the use of any American components in them.
Now, with the above incident of Chinese migrants being caught while trying to get smuggled into the US, only time can tell on when the relations between the two countries improve.
