Recently, a game called “The Revolution of our times” was removed from Google Play Store, as it violated certain policies of the company. A similar removal of a game was made by Apple earlier this week, as it was found that the game was helping the protestors in Hong Kong, by tracking the location of police, as stated by the Wall Street Journal.
The game was removed by Google upon request by the Hong Kong police. The game violated the policies of Google on the matter of “sensitive events.” The policy clearly states that “content that may be deemed as capitalizing on or lacking reasonable sensitivity towards a natural disaster, conflict, death or other tragic event” and upon careful investigation it was found that not only was the above-stated game violating the policies but was even found to be making profit from such events, which is intolerable by Google.
The developer of the game stated that he had planned on giving 80% of the profit to Spark Alliance, in order to help the protestors in getting bail. The developer, with a pseudonym of Spinner of Yarns, had created this game and had released it a week ago. Not only this, even Apple found a similar app in its App Store, which detected the position of police officers and helped the protestors in getting saved.
“The app displays police locations and we have verified with the Hong Kong Cybersecurity and Technology Crime Bureau that the app has been used to target and ambush police, threaten public safety, and criminals have used it to victimize residents in areas where they know there is no law enforcement. The app violates our guidelines and local laws” stated Apple in the interview with The Times.
Though there are mixed reviews for the protest going on in Hong Kong. Some of the famous personalities have been seen to be supporting the protestors, while some of the tech-giants are remaining neutral to the situation. Recently, Blizzard games banned a player for making a public comment or supporting the protestors in Hong Kong. Not only was the player banned from the tournaments organized by Blizzard but he was even deprived of the prize money that he had recently won in a competition. Upon questioning, Blizzard said that it was against the policy of the company due to which they had to ban the player. On the other hand, Epic games Inc., famously known for Fortnite, has stated that it won’t ban or punish any of its players for making any comments on politics, clearly indicating that they support the freedom of speech and human rights.
Leaving that aside, the apps have been already removed from the App Store and Play Store. No doubt, the developers had created the apps in order to help the protestors but it not only affected the policy of Apple and Google but had even given criminals a chance to benefit and do more crimes without getting caught. Unknowingly, they had put the lives of many people at stake in order to save the protestors.
