Location Data helps Google keep a tab on Compliance with a stay at Home Orders

It is that time of the decade when almost the whole world is following either a partial or a complete lockdown. Several hundred thousand people have been quarantined. And close vigilance is being implemented. At this very moment, the data giant Google announced the coming of its COVID-19 Community Mobility Reports. These reports that use location data are a tell-all package.

To slow the rate of transmission of the disease, which has been spreading at an enormous scale, people must stay indoors as much as possible. But even then, one cannot enforce the complete indoor stay. People need to get out of the comforts of their homes to bring groceries, visit a store, visit a doctor, go for a brisk walk, and catch a fresh breath of air.

As such, the matters have become worse for a number of countries that could not put in place adequate quarantine measures. The need for social distancing has become more important than ever. These reports by Google give aggregate data for the people that are too organized and anonymous. These reports and findings give valuable insight into the level of preparedness and scarcity if any.

The reports contain vital details about the movement of people in real-time. This movement has been tracked with the help of Google’s location data. Since the day Google announced the release of the Community Mobility Reports, users can download those files in the PDF Format. It would ensure that the files are downloaded easily and can be sent for other people to see.

A PDF format, as opposed to a web page format, ensures that the files can be shared easily. The movement patterns that are a part of the report cover all Retail and recreation sites and also take into account the visits of people to restaurants, cafes, and other commercial hubs like shopping plaza. Mostly all tourist places, for instance, the theme parks and museums too, come under the purview of the aforesaid reports by Google.

Not only these, common places and locations which are likely to be visited by the young population primarily like libraries, movie theaters, and many other similar places have also been tracked. The places of rejuvenation and refreshing like covering public beaches, marinas, etc. enjoy a good amount of footfall. These have also been included in the reports tracking the movement of people.

Such a huge amount of data also concerns itself with a plethora of segments of daily necessity and use and requires people to show their presence. These include the grocery and pharmacy, specialty food shops, medicine, and drug stores, regular supermarkets, etc. these places are greeted with a huge number of footfalls on general days, hence tracking becomes relevant.

Public places like parks, dog parks, and plazas attract a steady stream of the public throughout the day. Other locations like food warehouses and farmers’ markets as well have been taken into account of the process. The workplace and offices have also not been barred. Even residences have made their way to the list.

Modes of transport like the buses and trains and transit stations, bus and train stations, subway stops have been kept at the highest surveillance of this tracking report.
