Sony gets New PS5 Controller Design Patented

Sony patents new PlayStation 5 Controller design

In the April of 2019, speculations over Sony bringing its next-gen of play stations had started surfacing the inner and outer circles of the gaming community and technical news agencies and feature reports. It was in the October of 2019 that the news got confirmed finally, with Sony assuring that it would be continuing with the naming custom, pertaining to the title of its next-gen.

The next model was expectedly called Play station 5 that was also being called the “next-gen console” side by side. Like tradition would have it, only naming was confirmed with some minor details here and there that had been confirmed a lot officially before the final confirmation to the name. The latest in line PlayStation 5, which was set for launch in 2020, is anticipated to come with a USB Type-C port.

Then there was an amazing detail that was assured by the company. It said that the 5th generation play station would be a sporting upgraded controller that would also be coming with haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. Sony then gave an exclusive interview to the Wired, where it ensured it had been incorporating AMD’s Ryzen CPUs and Navi GPUs in the upcoming console, which should support ray tracing.

There was a significant improvement in the load time also of several games after the induction of SSD Storage. The load time of games improved, take for instance, the Marvel’s Spider-man game. The game used to take a total of 8.1 seconds to load on the PS4 Pro that is the fourth-gen play station. When the same was checked on an early prototype of the new play station, the recorded time came out to be merely 0.8 seconds.

With the pushing away of already old technology working with mechanical drives, there was a fair improvement with the use of SSD storage, which was done to boost load and boot times. Needless to say, the booting times were improved to a great deal. The games, rather than being a massive block of data, now got partitioned. This enabled developers to program their games, which further allowed separate instances of the game to be installed.

That also meant peace for the average player who does not want to go through a tedious process of downloading bits and pieces of junk if all he wants is to play one game at ease. So, now there is no need to download the extra modes or the multiplayer if the user wants to simply enjoy the single-player campaign as soon as he purchases the game, he or she can download just that, and nothing else.

Once the user thinks he does not want to play the single-player story, he can easily uninstall it and thus carve space for some other game. The use of Haptic Feedback in the fifth and next generation of controllers would be able to give players sound feedback through the use of strong but damped vibrations. Talking of better experience, the new controller would have an upgraded speaker, a USB Type-C connector, and bigger batteries also.

As and when it was required by the players, parts, and instances of the game could be installed by developers who wanted to program their games themselves. Sony’s lead system architect Mark Cerny stated that beginning from the PS 5 games console, the installation of the games was going to change towards getting more modular in design.

On Dec 26, the brand registered a new console design with a controller prototype and got it patented. The info was secured by a Dutch publication Lets Go Digital, which found documentation of the same on the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) database. The new design also claimed a USB Micro-B charger, which suggested that the latest controller could work with the PS 4 too.

The design of the new prototype looks very similar to the on-going DualShock 4 controllers, which give the same old vibes with a slight alteration. The difference exists on the front of the buttons, where it has been shown that it does not have a PS button. On the contrary, there would be two additional buttons on the other side.

According to Polygon, the back buttons may be moved to other places, i.e., they are programmable, making the controller customizable. It said, “The two back buttons can be activated with triggers in most of the proposed designs. While they seem to be located directly behind the Analog sticks on most of the proposed layouts in the patent, there is mention that they might move to other places.”


Again, the design that has been presented in the patent is not final; that being said, it would be subject to changes and suggestions by developers too. For now, there is no solid confirmation on whether it will even be released as a real product after a final decision.
