Verizon finally shows us the maps of areas where they have launched their 5G network. 5G is already available in 18 US states, and recently it was instilled in cities like Boston, Houston, and Sioux Falls. Previously, 5G is available in states like Washington DC, Detroit, Atlanta, Dallas, Indianapolis, Omaha, Denver, Chicago, etc.
The maps show us the city and streets that have 5G available to them. If you click on any of the neighborhoods, you can access the street by street view for 5G availability. Verizon has finally addressed some of its biggest criticisms- the lack of maps to portray the coverage of the 5G network. According to sources, this new network will soon expand to a total of 30 states by the end of this year. They recently brought 5G to the football stadiums, apart from that, the network is made available in high traffic areas and market landmarks.
The company has also released the map of midtown Manhattan. The 5G network coverage is basically restricted to streets and sidewalks. It is not bad when you consider the range limits of the network waves, but the signal does not work properly indoors. Using 5G at any café will be difficult. The coverage doesn’t get better when you reach Brooklyn. But that does not stop Verizon from expanding to Chicago. The network coverage in Harlem is expanding too.
The perks of these maps make it easier for early adopters of 5G. They can now easily locate the signal strength and network hotspots using the maps provided by the company. The availability of the 5G network is quite limited, but the company is working on it, but we cannot deny the geographical restrictions to the network users.
Verizon’s 5G strategy heavily depends on the millimeter wave, which has been highly criticized by its rival T-mobile. The millimeter waves have their shortcomings; they cannot cover a large geographical perimeter and penetrate through walls like LTE. A combination of mid-band, low-band, and the millimeter-wave is used by other carriers to provide the 5G network, but once you are out of the millimeter-wave range, you don’t get the 5G signals. The phones that can currently access Verizon’s 5G millimeter wave are Samsung Galaxy Note 10 plus 5G, LG’s V50 ThinQ 5G, and Samsung Galaxy S10 5G.
According to tests, the millimeter-wave can cover a radius of up to 800 feet. The wave cannot penetrate the building; therefore, it is not a bubble coverage. The waves do reach the streets, but its not a bubble radius but a straight line of sight coverage. As Verizon will improve the assigning of the 4G and 5G cells, we can expect the coverage to improve with time.
When you get into the coverage area, you can expect exceptional data speed, which is chalked up to 1Gbps. For now, Verizon dominates the 5G market because they also provide most devices with the 5G feature. This, of course, might change in the future. Now that they have us a picture of how 5G areas are covered, you can make a more well-informed decision about whether you want to switch to 5G immediately or wait for the next generation of devices.
