Accessibility Statement

Last updated: June 2026

MySmartChoice is committed to making our Platform accessible to everyone, including people with disabilities. We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA.

Our commitment

We believe everyone should be able to use MySmartChoice, regardless of ability or the assistive technology they rely on. This means:

  • All interactive elements are keyboard navigable
  • Images and icons include descriptive alternative text
  • Colour contrasts meet WCAG 2.1 AA minimum ratios (4.5:1 for body text)
  • Form fields have associated labels and error messages
  • Pages have logical heading hierarchies (H1 → H2 → H3)
  • Navigation landmarks (header, main, footer, nav) are correctly marked up
  • The Platform is usable with screen readers (tested with NVDA and VoiceOver)
  • Focus indicators are visible and high-contrast
  • Animations and motion respect the prefers-reduced-motion media query

Known limitations

While we strive for full WCAG 2.1 AA compliance, some areas of the Platform are still being improved:

  • Rich text editor (admin only): The Tiptap editor used in our CMS may have limited screen reader support in some configurations. This affects admin users only, not public visitors.
  • Third-party websites: When you follow an external link from an article, you may be redirected to a third-party site. We cannot guarantee the accessibility of external sites.
  • Complex data visualisations: Some admin dashboards may use charts for visual reference; tabular equivalents are planned where applicable.

Technical specification

MySmartChoice is built with the following accessibility-supporting technologies:

  • HTML5 semantic elements and ARIA landmarks
  • React 19 with Next.js 15 (server-side rendered — content accessible without JavaScript)
  • Tailwind CSS (respects system font size and contrast preferences)
  • Lucide React icons with aria-hidden or descriptive labels

Reporting an accessibility issue

If you encounter an accessibility barrier on MySmartChoice, we want to know. Please describe the issue as specifically as possible:

  • The page or feature where you experienced the problem
  • The assistive technology or browser you were using
  • What you expected to happen versus what actually happened

Contact us at contact@mysmartchoice.org or via our Contact page. We aim to respond within 5 business days and to resolve confirmed accessibility issues within 30 days.

Enforcement

If you are not satisfied with our response to an accessibility complaint, you may contact the relevant enforcement body in your jurisdiction. In the UK, this is the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC). In the EU, contact your national equality body.

Formal compliance status

MySmartChoice is partially compliant with WCAG 2.1 Level AA due to the known limitations listed above. We are actively working to achieve full compliance. This statement was last reviewed in June 2026.
